Why month-end is always a scramble — and what to move earlier
Almost none of the month-end close actually requires the month to have ended. The peak is a scheduling problem, not a workload problem — and it is costing you accuracy.
Month-end is the same work every month. So why is it always a scramble?
Strip it back and most of the close is:
- Reconciliations — bank, debtors, creditors, control accounts
- Accruals and prepayments
- Depreciation
- Cut-off — making sure goods received, unbilled revenue and late invoices land in the right period
Look at that list and notice something: almost none of it actually requires the month to have ended.
Reconciliations done weekly leave you reconciling four days of movement on day one, not thirty. Recurring accruals — rent, utilities, audit fees, interest — belong on a standing schedule, not rediscovered each month. A prepayment’s amortisation schedule should be set when the invoice is posted; at month-end it becomes a posting, not a calculation. Depreciation is only a task if the fixed asset register is out of date; keep additions and disposals current and it runs on its own.
What’s genuinely period-end is a much shorter list: cut-off, judgement calls, review.
Why the peak costs you accuracy
And this matters beyond tidiness. When everything lands in the same four days, the part needing the most thought — review — gets done last, late at night, by people who have been going since seven. That is precisely when errors get through. The team burns out and the numbers are weaker for it.
The peak isn’t a workload problem. It’s a scheduling problem. The same hours, moved earlier, buy you accuracy and a finance team that doesn’t dread the first week of every month.
So the question worth asking your own team: what is the one thing they always leave until day one?
Is your close a four-day scramble? We help finance teams move the work that does not need to wait, so review gets done with a clear head rather than at midnight on day four. The first consultation is free.
